Pregnancy and Depression

According to American Psychiatric Association, depression is the most prevailing health condition nowadays. Not only symptoms of depression in men/women are common but also symptoms of depression in children are even seen very commonly. However, in women depression during pregnancy is becoming another complication associated with pregnancy. Statistics even reveals that every year at least 20% rise in depression during pregnancy cases are taking place.

Nevertheless, causes of depression during pregnancy differentiate from woman to woman, but some common causes of depression during pregnancy are fear of physical changes or undesirable body changes, which may associate with other pregnancy complications, financial burden that cause long term anxiety, relationship troubles, hormonal imbalance that may cause mental stress. However, unplanned pregnancy also leads to mental stress, physical abuse, family history or hereditary factor, fertility treatment, consumption of depressant drugs, having suffered from miscarriage, which may cause stress and anxiety for upcoming pregnancy are other causes of depression during pregnancy.

Symptoms of depression during pregnancy are physical and mental fatigue, feeling of sadness, anxiety, being selflessness, hopelessness, insomnia (sleeping very less), hypersomnia (sleeping too much), and irritability. Lack of interest in common chores, loss of appetite basically having interest in less nutritive food such as carbohydrates, sugar chocolates, lack of concentration, low self-esteem, fear of about body changes, guilt, being worried about fetus, and in serve cases thoughts of suicide are some common symptoms of depression during pregnancy.

There are various Depression during Pregnancy Treatment available, though experts says eliminating the root causes of depression during pregnancy and taking extra care of pregnant women is the significant step ahead for depression treatment during pregnancy. However, meditation and yoga are some basic things should be done before pregnancy besides this, a woman should prepare her mind before planning pregnancy and should adapt a positive outlook before pregnancy. Eating nutritional food, following exercising routine, performing harmonious activities such as medication, laugh therapy are some ways to deprive the chances of depression during pregnancy.

Cognitive behavioral therapy and Psychotherapy are two most reliable professional depression treatments that helps to get out of depression during pregnancy. Both these professional depression treatment aims at bringing significant change in thought patterns, and thus promotes positive outlook. However, in certain cases, Psychotherapy also include anti depression medication but not every pregnant woman is advisable to seek anti depression medication as they may cause several undesirable side effects, so for best results of depression treatment, medical help only by a professional psychotherapist is required.
